Independent Voting Rights Under Attack

The Republican Party of Texas filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson in a bid to restrict participation in the Republican party’s primary elections to only voters registered with the party.

Let’s break it down. Texas does not have partisan voter registration and they have an open primary system where every voter picks the party primary ballot they wish to vote in. Enacting a closed Republican primary would require every voter in the state to re-register to vote and to pick a party or be denied the right to vote in primaries. This would be a profound change and it would lock independent voters out of the primaries.

The Republican Party of Ohio has introduced House Bill 320, it would mean that for the May 2026 primaries, voters have to declare their party affiliation by or on Feb. 4th, 2026 or they cannot vote in the primaries. The bill has been referred to the House Government Oversight Committee, where both the Chair Thomas Hall and Vice Chair Ron Ferguson are bill sponsors.

This is wrong, narrows the voting rights of Ohioans. and needs to be stopped. Our networks in Ohio are calling the Chair and Vice Chairs of the House Oversight Committee and their legislators to urge them not to support this anti-democratic bill.

These partisan attacks are coordinated efforts to remove American voters from our election processes.

Independents Speak Out

Thanks to everyone who has shared their story in our Independents Speak Out series! Since the media and pollsters are hell bent on pretending independents are “leaners” or apathetic, we have to tell our stories!

Here is what two independents shared about why they are independent.

Keep your stories coming by filling out the Independent Speaks Out survey.

POWER HOUR

On September 22nd, spend your Monday evening (6:00 – 7:30 pm ET) with fellow independents, Danny Battista and me at this month’s Power Hour. We’ll spend some time swapping stories of why we are independent, hear updates of indie action from across the country, and create some independent story telling to amplify our voices. We’ll write some Letters to the Editor and fill out the Independents Speak Out survey.

Here’s the thing — No experience needed!

You already have all the experience needed as an independent!

My goal this month is to double the number of people who participate in the Power Hour!

Check it out – we’ll have a lot of fun and create a little indie power together!
