Independents Highlight Reasons for Independence
Hi, Let Us Vote community. Two weeks ago, I asked everyone to take a survey on why we are independent. Thanks to everyone who responded.
Today, I wanted to share some of the preliminary results which I think are quite interesting. Take a look. And if you have not had a chance to take the survey, you still can through this link.
BTW, if anyone would like a copy of the survey done by Independent Voting that I mentioned two weeks ago, shoot me an email at cstewart@openprimaries.org.
PRELIMINARY RESULTS
- 93% of us don’t believe we get the respect we deserve from the media, the political parties and the candidates.
When asked what we like best about being an independent, the top two answers are:
- Rather vote for the person, not the party (55%)
- Partisanship is destroying our democracy and has to stop (34%)
Take a look at the chart below to see the answer to how/when we became an independent voter.

Spotlight PA: Will PA ever let independents vote in primary elections?
Last week, Spotlight PA held a virtual discussion on opening the primaries to the 1.4 million independents across the state.
David Thornburgh, Ballot PA Chair kicked off the event and commented that opening the primaries to independents in Pennsylvania is the voting rights issue of the 21st century.
The discussion was moderated by Kate Huangpu, government reporter at Spotlight PA and included Jennifer Bullock, founder of Independent Pennsylvanians; Thad Hall, Mercer County elections director; and State Rep. Jared Solomon, who has introduced a bill for open primaries in the state legislature.
You can watch the full discussion on the Spotlight PA website here:

Are you a Philly resident being locked out of the primaries?
On May 20th from 8-10 am we are holding an independent voter informational picket at Rittenhouse Square to talk with people about the unfairness of the current closed primary. We’ll be handing out information, holding signs that say things like, “I can’t vote today, ask me why?”
Can you join for an hour or two? No experience necessary. Your presence will make a REAL DIFFERENCE because we’re going to film what we’re doing and post it on social media for thousands of people in PA and the country to see. And it’s not a protest, it’s an informational picket – no shouting involved. Come as you are and talk with people about what it’s like to be an independent voter in a town that shuts you out of voting.
