To Executives at Fox News, CNN, PBS Newshour, CBS, NBC, ABC, and NPR
Across the country, 43% of Americans consider themselves independents, not Democrats or Republicans. We are the largest voting block in the country, yet the major TV and radio networks act as if the country is 100% partisan.
We are tired of being ignored, and having news commentary that leaves out an independent perspective, which leads to coverage that is biased and unbalanced.
We urge you to create more thoughtful coverage of who independent voters are and why our numbers are booming, how we think and vote, and why we don’t want to be in a party.
More and more Americans are leaving red and blue by the wayside. Don’t ignore us!
Here are steps to take:
- Book independent leaders on your political analysis shows. There are dozens of intelligent, caring leaders who your audience would like to hear from even though they are not on team blue or red.
- Interview independent voters regularly, not just in the week before an election which is what happens now.
- Stop insisting that independents are moderates. We are not! Some of us are conservative, some liberal, some are all over the place. Get to know us, don’t put a label on us.
It is time for fair and equal coverage of the largest group of voters in the country!
